Where to stay in Queensland

Brisbane is the capital of the Sunshine State, and an excellent place to explore before making your way north to the Great Barrier Reef or tropical Whitsunday Islands. The Gold Coast is a city in itself, as well as being home to some of the finest beaches – and surf breaks – in the world. As well as its stunning coastline, Queensland offers plenty of things to do further inland such as exploring Lamington National Park or enjoying a trip to the cool, high country of the Granite Belt around Stanthorpe and visiting the areas many wineries or gourmet food stops.

Best time to stay in Queensland

Queensland’s coastline stretches nearly 7,000 kilometres and spans five climate zones, however the state is known for its hot summers (humid and wet on the coast, dryer inland) and relatively mild winters. If you plan on visiting the Great Barrier Reef or Tropical North Queensland, summer can be rainy and also comes with other considerations such as the prevalence of stingers and some jellyfish.

Getting around Queensland

If you’re keen on exploring a lot the Sunshine State and you only have a few weeks, the best way to get around Queensland is to fly. The flight from Brisbane to Cairns is around two and a half hours’ long, so that gives you an idea of the ground you’re covering. If you have more time on your hands, hiring a car and driving is also a good choice. Both the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are roughly an hour south and north of Brisbane respectively, and having a car gives you the freedom to explore at your leisure.
