1.Learn to say please and thank you - ‘Tolong’ and ‘Terima Kasih’. Then while you’re at it, good morning is ‘Selamat Pagi’.

 

2.Learn to barter - Be willing to walk away from a sale but also be fair, the Balinese are lowly paid and super generous. Start your bid at about ⅓ of what’s first offered and go up from there.

4.Drink plenty of water because it gets very hot in Bali and take insect repellent for the evenings and jungle adventures.

8.On temple visits - cover up, if you don’t already have a sarong to cover your legs, there is often somewhere you can borrow or hire one from. Also make sure your shoulders are covered too, wearing a sleeved t-shirt is often the best option.

 

9.Don’t bother packing a beach towel - there should be towels at all of the resorts and hotels.

 

10.Get an international driver's license - you will most likely need this to drive and rent cars, scooters and motorbikes.

 

11.Only ever get in a taxi with a meter and make sure the driver turns it on- Blue Bird Taxi (+62 (0)361 701 111) is the most popular and reliable service- all of their taxis are metered.

 

12.Charging your devices - 220 Volts, 50Hz. Electrical plugs are two-pronged ‘Europlug’ type.

13.Bring an Australian power board - if you have a lot of cameras, phones etc to charge because that way you only need one converter.

 

14.Always use right hand for gesturing and never your left hand or feet as it is considered very rude.

 

15.Pack sunscreen - most things you can pick up when you’re in Bali however sunscreen can sometimes be hard to find and expensive.

 

16.Don’t drink the water - Only drink sealed bottled water and wash your teeth with that too. One other tip is to even put a hand towel over the tap in your bathroom to remind you not to use it. Make sure your drinks don’t have ice in them either. Because ‘Bali Belly’ is the worst. But if you do get it…

 

17.Bring raspberry cordial - and pack some  Imodium or gastro stop incase you do get Bali Belly.

 

18.Hand sanitizer - is good as an extra precaution before eating.

20.Put 150,000 Rupiah away as soon as you change your cash so you’re sorted for the departure tax at the airport.

 

21. Also don't lose track of a little white card you fill out prior to arrival, customs like to have that again on departure.
