Settle in for an Uluru sunset
Is there a more iconic vision of the Northern Territory than the sun setting on majestic Uluru? This massive natural monolith is perhaps the territory's most famous attraction and the ancient rock formation – which is also known as Ayers Rock and is located around 450 kilometres from Alice Springs – attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Visitors to Uluru are required to stay just outside the perimeter of the national park in the nearby service town of Yulara. Campsites are available, however the Yulara township is predominantly home to some of the most remote hotel accommodation in Australia.
Sleep out under the stars
At more than a million square kilometres in size, there's no shortage of open space in which to pitch a tent and sleep out under the stars. Camping is one of the most popular forms of Northern Territory accommodation and official campsites are dotted throughout this expansive region.
Campsite choices can be divided by region given the Northern Territory's vast expanse, with many visitors flocking to the picturesque Litchfield National Park and the tropical Kakudu National Park in the north of the territory. The Nitmiluk National Park further south is equally popular with visitors eager to explore the spectacular Katherine Gorge.
Dust yourself down in Darwin
The Northern Territory's cosmopolitan capital Darwin is one of the best places to dust yourself clean from the surrounds of the arid outback. This eclectic city boasts a wide range of accommodation and a distinctly Asian flavour, with Darwin undoubtedly one of Australia's most diverse cities.
Most visitors try to beat the tropical heat in Darwin with a stay in one of the city's numerous upscale hotels. The Hilton Darwin boasts a prime location in the heart of the city, while Mantra on the Esplanade offers unparallelled views out over the Arafura Sea.
