With Chinese heritage, Portuguese influence and a modern age of American investment, Macau is the very definition of ‘east meets west’.
One of two Special Administrative Regions of China (the other being Hong Kong), Macau draws a crowd for one main reason: its glitzy casinos.
Welcoming some 30 million tourists per year – most pouring in from mainland China – you may not have thought much about Macau, but it’s definitely worth a stopover.
Jump on the ferry from Hong Kong and you could meet Macau within the hour, exploring its cobbled Portuguese lanes downtown and sparkling pockets of luxury ‘shoppes’.
