Uluru
Having lived in Australia for more than two years now it was about time I got down to the Red Centre to visit the landmark that is so uniquely Australian. Flying into Uluru (Ayers Rock) did not disappoint. There's something about catching that first glimpse of the world famous formation synonymous with the Australian outback which captures your attention.
We did several tours during our visit including sunrise and sunset at Uluru, Kings Canyon Climb as well as a camel ride and the Sounds of Silence Dinner. The Sounds of Silence is an absolute must. The food is fantastic, the setting is beautiful, the beer, wine and soft drinks are included and the star talk is interesting and informative. No trip to Ayer's Rock would be complete without it.
Sunset at Uluru was for me more spectacular than Sunrise – photos just don't do it justice!
I highly recommend a visit to Kings Canyon. The AAT Kings guide on the three hour climb was very knowledgeable and made sure the pace was suitable for everyone. The view of the canyon from the top is one not to miss – having been formed over hundreds of thousands of years, the scale of nature at work is really brought to mind. It is a long day out but well worth it. This tour can also take you back to Alice Springs instead of going back to Ayer's Rock – beats just sitting on a transfer!
The only place we didn't visit is Kata-Tjuta/The Olgas which I understand are considered by some to be more impressive than Uluru so a tour out there is definitely recommended.
Uluru is much more than just a big rock in the middle of the desert – you have to go to see for yourself!
