Effective Saturday 30 June 2018, a new restriction came into place on the carriage of powders in hand luggage on international flights.
Since 2006, there has been a restriction in place around the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels, limited to 100ml (3.4 ounce) or smaller. The new powder restriction will limit individual items to 350 grams or 12 ounces in carry-on luggage.
What items are limited?
This restriction applies to inorganic (synthetic) powders only. Powder products that are restricted include:
- Cosmetics
- Powdered deodorant
- Talcum powder
- Salt scrubs
- Powdered detergents
Please note: the average weight of a loose cosmetic powder is around 30g and a compact powder 12g.
Are all powders restricted?
Generally the restrictions apply to inorganic powders only. Organic powders such as flour, baby formula, spices and the like will have to be checked but generally will be exempt from the weight restriction.
Prescription baby formulas (powdered) and prescription medications may also exceed these limitations. Cremated human remains are also exempt. These items must be verified then places in a secure, tamper-free bag. Duty free items purchased at the airport will also need to be sealed in secure, tamper-free bags before boarding.
Does this apply to check-in luggage or just carry-on?
These restrictions only apply to carry-on. You can carry powder items that exceed these limits in your check-in luggage. All items in check-in luggage still must comply with the rules around the carriage of hazardous materials
Will this be strictly enforced around the world?
Implemented on Saturday 30 June, Australian border security and the United States TSA (Transport Safety Authority) have begun screening for powders in hand luggage. Other countries and airlines will provide updates, however we do anticipate this will eventually be adopted globally, and so should apply to all international services.
