On the agenda could be lazing by the resort pool, soaking up the sunshine on the beach or signing up for the numerous sport-based pursuits on offer. Here is a selection of popular resorts located on these paradise islands.

Qualia, Hamilton Island

Situated on the largest inhabited island in the Whitsundays, the luxury resort of qualia was architecturally designed by Australian architect Chris Beckingham whose philosophy was, "to create a luxurious Australian retreat that stimulates the senses and draws the outside in." Be sure to enjoy a casual lunch at Pebble Beach, savour a fine dining experience in the Long Pavilion and also peruse the literary collection in the Library.

Peppers Blue on Blue, Magnetic Island

A short ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island was named by Captain Cook in 1770 because of the magnetic effect the island had on his ship's compass. You too can be drawn in by Maggie's incredible appeal. For accommodation check in to Peppers Blue on Blue - this resort is situated on the water's edge and features a lagoon-style swimming pool, a resort swimming pool and an Endota Day Spa.

Long Island Resort, Long Island

Out of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays, Long Island is the closest island to mainland Australia. After exploring the 2,500 acres of tropical rainforests along the 20 kilometres of walking tracks, return to the Long Island Resort to relax by the pool or enjoy a delicious meal in the Palms Restaurant.

The heritage-listed Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and was named after shipwreck survivor Eliza Fraser. The perched lakes are stunning and also consider taking a four-wheel drive along the beach to the wreck of the SS Maheno. On the other hand, simply relax in the beautiful surrounds of the Kingfisher Bay Resort.

Hayman, Hayman Island

For a great Whitsunday experience, consider staying on Hayman Island at the resort simply named Hayman. To pass the time, there's a variety of activities to choose from including sea kayaking, water skiing, tube rides and snorkelling  to admire the incredible collection of marine life that call the Great Barrier Reef home.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa, Daydream Island

Holiday-makers may need to pinch themselves to make sure that they're not dreaming on arrival to Daydream Island Resort. There are 296 rooms and suites to choose from that offer either views over the water or the rainforest.

Tangalooma, Moreton Island

Every evening at the Tangalooma Island Resort, wild dolphins arrive like clockwork to be hand fed by delighted holiday-makers who savour the opportunity to please these magnificent mammals. During the day, there's sand tobogganing, beach volleyball, bush walking and kayaking amongst others to keep guests entertained.

Lyndon Barnett

Guided by curiosity and a sense of adventure, Lyndon travelled independently to 69 countries on six continents. As such, travel is Lyndon's only addiction. He enjoys with equal measure - scaling the peaks of a South American mountain at altitude, attending opera in a European Opera House or hunting for a bargain in an Asian market.
