When you’re looking for a beach destination, Hawaii stands out as one of the best. Whether you’re hoping to relax or you're ready to hit the waves on a surf, swim or diving adventure, these beaches offer the idyllic Hawaiian settings to make your outing a memorable one. And it doesn’t matter which beautiful Hawaiian island you choose. There are enticing stretches of sand no matter where you go.
Waikiki, Oahu
It may be busy with tourists, but Waikiki is on the list of the world’s most famous beaches for a reason. Luxury high-rise resorts line the narrow beach, giving the stretch of sand its glamorous, international appeal. And with beautiful Diamond Head views and warm, shallow waters for swimming, the beach offers the perfect Honolulu day out.
Lanikai Beach, Oahu
One of Hawaii’s most famous, and most beautiful beaches, Lanikai is blessed with soft white sands, crystal clear waters and warm tropical breezes. Adding to the idyllic spot, two small islands rest in the distance, each providing a coastal sanctuary for Hawaii’s beautiful bird life. The shallow waters provide perfect swimming conditions for families with young children too.
Kailua Beach, Oahu
Just a short walk away from Lanikai Beach, Kailua’s palm-lined beach offers pristine views and miles of sand for long walks and sunbathing. The gentle waves are ideal for wading and swimming and the nearby park and upscale restaurants provide occasional respite from the warm Hawaii sun.
Mahaulepu Beach, Kauai
While the winds and waves, and rocky shores make this beach more suited for the experienced swimmer, it provides unique points of interest along the shore. Blow holes, lava tubes, sandstone cliffs and hidden coves make Mahaulepu the perfect place to hike and explore.
Poipu Beach Park, Kauai
Another of Kauai’s popular south coast beaches is Poipu. Unlike Mahaulepu, this beach is protected from the strong currents and waves, making it an ideal swimming spot for the family. Surfers can still catch the occasional wave with a short swim out from shore. Also close to shore are shallow reefs that are teaming with fish.
Hanalei Bay, Kauai
With its crescent shape and crystal blue waters, Hanalei Bay resembles the perfect setting for a Hollywood romance film. Whether it’s for a relaxing day sunbathing and swimming, or for more adventurous outdoor activities like kayaking, surfing or paddle boarding, Hanalei Bay offers both serene peace and adventure. Kayakers will enjoy paddling up the Hanalei River and the easy ride back with the tide.
The Big Island’s Hapuna Beach State Park
The perfect waves for boogie boarding and swimming, Hapuna Beach State Park is one of the most popular beaches on the Big Island. Located on the north-eastern shore of the island, the beach offers soft white sands and hidden coves for a relaxing day out in the sun. Picnic areas and public toilets are available nearby.
Kapalua Beach, Maui
The secluded Kapalua Beach on Maui’s west coast, is another peaceful crescent-shaped beach, nestled perfectly between two rock formations. Acting as barriers from rougher waters, the small land masses provide perfect swimming conditions for families. Lovely green spaces line the beach with nearby condos, guesthouses and restaurants just far enough away so as not to ruin the quiet beach setting. Outdoor showers are available at the beach for a quick rinse after swimming.
Kaanapali Beach, Maui
Another beach on Maui’s idyllic western shore, Kaanapali Beach is famous for its upscale resorts and nearby dining and shopping venues. And while all these services are close by, the beautiful beach retains its serene environment. Getting around on foot is a breeze too, due to the paved footpath that stretches along the grassed area near the top edge of the beach. Think Waikiki but quieter and less crowded.
Hulopoe Beach, Lanai
Located on the southern shore of the tiny island of Lanai, Hulopoe Beach is a quiet refuge with little foot traffic. Perfect for couples and those who want to get away from it all, the beach is the perfect spot for a swim and a snorkel. The beach is known for its many fish species, and dolphins can occasionally be seen nearby.
