There’s nothing more romantic than walking hand-in-hand at dusk down tiny cobbled streets, past rows of candlelit restaurants. And there’s nowhere quite like Europe when it comes to scenes just like that. Europe has some of the best honeymoon destinations loved-up, post-wedding couples could possibly wish for – here are the top six that have won our hearts.

Soak up the romance in the 'City of Love'

Paris

If there were a perfect honeymoon scene it would take place in Paris – a city that is synonymous with romance and is known as the 'City of Love'. It is the place to cement your love for each other as well as your love for fine wine, cheese, and world-class desserts.

The French know how to indulge every sense so, even after you’ve treated the taste buds, there’s plenty left to see. Come for the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre, and stay for the alluring backstreet shops and boutique galleries.

Rome

While the Italians like to promote their love for minimum-fuss flavours and family-style cooking, there’s really something quite decadent about Rome. Seeing the Colosseum for the first time is an experience you never quite forgot. If neither of you have ever been to Rome, it certainly makes for a memorable honeymoon.

The Italian culture is full of love and the city itself has much to see. Sites range from the Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain and Roman Forum to the countless piazza and Vatican City.

 Celebrate your nuptials, London style

London

If you’re a history-buff by day and a party-animal by night, then London will make for an exciting and adventurous honeymoon. Don’t expect to sleep, though – London is a city for couples who like to experience as much as possible at all times of the day and night.

Tours to sites such as the London Dungeon, the palaces, and all the outdoor markets will fill your days. This leaves your nights free to be as wild as you like. Have dinner on the South Bank or a pre-theatre meal in Covent Garden if you’re the candlelight type. Then head to areas like Camden or the East End to get a feel for some real London nightlife.

Greek Islands

There’s nothing more stunning than the bright whites and blues of a traditional Grecian backdrop. Santorini is hands-down one of the most breathtaking islands for sights just like this. With stunning sunsets and food, Santorini has long been the refuge of the rich and famous.

If you’re looking to experience as much as possible on your honeymoon, try island-hopping. Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands and the most stunning in terms of architecture, whereas Rhodes has all the high-class resorts for honeymooners who care chasing serious luxury.

Be charmed by the beauty of Barcelona

Barcelona

There’s something seriously passionate about Barcelona – it’s as if creativity runs down every inch of every street. Walking through the city is a treat alone, with stunning architecture by Antoni Gaudí and lots of hidden laneways with boutique cafes, bars and stores.

Barcelona is for the young at heart. Don’t expect a resort-style honeymoon like in Greece, but do expect some adventurous nights and making a new circle of friends.

Geneva

This clean and beautiful city is a delight to visit. Geneva is often one of the highest-ranked cities in the world when it comes to quality of life. When it comes to honeymoons it has all the things that lead to romance: beautiful walks along picturesque streets, glistening lakes and peaceful parks.

Stay in a luxury inner-city hotel like the Grand Hotel Kempinski and make the most of some serious pampering in one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Tracy Fitzgerald

Tracy Fitzgerald is a big believer that relaxation comes in many forms and has been travelling her whole life trying to discover ways to pacify her restless soul. Her travels have seen her teaching surfing (badly) in the Dominican Republic, playing her violin to strangers in Prague, ‘Jeeping’ around tropical Puerto Rican islands, and living the high life in Dubai and the busy life in London. Now in Sydney, Tracy is a writer and editor who is still trying her very best to just relax…
