Norfolk Island, located 800 kilometres off the southeast coast of New Caledonia in the Pacific, is a tiny island measuring just eight kilometres by five kilometres. Norfolk Island's inhabitants are mostly descendants of the mutineers of the HMS Bounty and this legacy suggests adventure. Whether it's a day trip to Phillip Island and all-weather sightseeing, horse riding, sea kayaking or a mystery dinner theatre event,  Norfolk Island promises adventure.

Here are our top adventure activities on Norfolk Island.

 Norfolk Island

Sightseeing
Norfolk Island offers fascinating sightseeing, across hilly countryside and into island homes and convict buildings. Dress as a convict to join a progressive dinner hosted by the locals, or attend a dinner and dance evening. Visit remote properties and valleys, and drive through the national park on a guided 4WD tour, join an artists' trail, or set out on a self-guided iPod tour and learn about the discovery and history of the island as you go.

Horse Riding
There is no better way to take in the natural beauty of Norfolk Island than on horseback. With horses to suit all ages and riding abilities, as well as a range of trails for beginner and experienced riders, choose from short rides of 30 minutes duration or long rides of 2-3 hours or more. Enjoy Devonshire Tea at the Tea House upon your return or take tea and damper with you on your trail ride. For an old-school experience, why not take a carriage ride? Two Clydesdales, those gentle giants, will take you around Norfolk Island.

Sea Kayaking
Norfolk Island has around 32 kilometres of coastline, which makes sea kayaking an obvious choice for those seeking an adventurous trip. Norfolk Island's edge is rugged enough to have prompted French explorer, Jean-Francois de Galaup, to note in 1788 that the coastline was fit only for angels and eagles. Paddle seven kilometres from Cascade Pier to Captain Cook Lookout. Look for the eagles, petrels, sea turtles and humpback whales.

Phillip Island
Just six kilometres from Norfolk Island, between Australia and New Zealand in the middle of the Southwest Pacific, discover the tiny, uninhabited, basalt island, Phillip Island. For serious adventurers only, Phillip Island beckons from across rough sea and is accessible by boat and then rope, as you scramble up the 200-metre high cliffs that rise out of the water. With its barren landscape and hundreds of sooty terns screeching and flapping across the rocks, Phillip Island offers an untamed adventure of a different kind in a unique, protected island eco-system.

Fletcher's Mutiny Cyclorama and Fletcher's Fate Mystery Dinner
Norfolk Island's Tourism Award winning Fletcher's Mutiny Cyclorama is a must-see for those adventurers intending to experience the thrilling mystery dinner theatre dining option. Walk inside this 360-degree panoramic painting depicting the world's most famous mutiny story, the Bounty adventures. A wonderful audio-visual experience, Fletcher's Mutiny Cyclorama is the ideal introduction to the story you'll see played out before you by a cast of six during a three-course meal, in the dramatic Fletcher's Fate Mystery Dinner.

Xanthe Coward

Xanthe's favourite travel destinations are the Greek Islands, Indonesia, Fiji and Vanuatu. With a background in performing arts, fine food, wine and good times, Xanthe enjoys travel that brings her close to the locals and their leisure activities. Being a theatre reviewer means that Xanthe will always do dinner and a show before checking out the late night city scene and still be up early to find the markets and a decent pot of chai.
