The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury train service that ventures through one of the most beautiful parts of the world – the stunning landscape of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. There are various routes and levels of service that travellers can take and plenty of stops along the way.
The Routes
These routes are a selection of our favourites – there are plenty of options so there’s bound to be one which best suits your travelling style.
First Passage To The West
If your idea of travel is retracing the footsteps of some of the world’s bravest explorers then this route will leave you awestruck. It’s the most popular route on the Rocky Mountaineer and follows the path that nineteenth century adventurers once took when they were uniting Canada from east to the west.
Journey through: Vancouver, Kamloops, Lake Louise, Banff and Calgary.
Coastal Passage
As the only route that passes into the US, the Coastal Passage is another popular option. This route is usually an add-on to other journeys and takes passengers from Seattle, Washington to Vancouver, British Columbia. Great for those who want it all from experiencing bustling cosmopolitan cities to the serenity of the Canadian Rockies just a train ride away.
Journey through: Seattle, Vancouver and Canadian Rockies.
Journey Through The Clouds
This route ticks some serious bucket-list style boxes. Journey through the Clouds takes passengers along the Fraser River and then up towards Mount Robson – the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies – so you can check death-defying heights off the list. If you find yourself lucky enough to take this journey we recommend opting for a class of service that has the see-through dome ceiling, as the views are spectacular.
Journey through: Vancouver, Kamloops and Jasper.
Coast To Coast
Imagine dipping your toes into the ocean on one side of Canada and two weeks later doing the same thing on the other side. This is a trip for the more extravagant traveller who likes cross-country adventures. You can expect luxurious hotel stays along the way and you’ll surely catch a glimpse of bears, eagles and other wildlife in their natural environment.
Journey through: Vancouver, Kamloops, Banff, Jasper, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.
The Levels Of Service
Possibly one of the most important choices when it comes to picking your Rocky Mountaineer journey is deciding how you’d like to travel. There are three levels of service and depending what you expect on board and how much you would like to pay. See below for which option sounds like your cup of tea.
GoldLeaf
The GoldLeaf Service not only means an extra level of personal service but custom-designed trains, too. Bi-level carriages with see-through ceilings are designed to make the passenger feel like they are out in the thick of nature yet also in the comfort of a luxury vehicle. The carriages also feature a lower-level dining area, upper-level viewing and seating area, and outdoor decks.
SilverLeaf
Rocky Mountaineer’s mid-tier level offers stunning scenery through a custom-designed, single level glass dome coach. Hot breakfasts and lunches are served in-seat, lunch is accompanied by a fresh mobile salad bar, and dessert isn’t forgotten either!
RedLeaf
RedLeaf passengers enjoy reclining seating, tour-style commentary by their carriage host, meals served at their seats and large windows from which to view the scenery. There are also complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and snacks.
