Winter is one of the best times to visit the Sunshine Coast with its mild, clear skies. And with the cooler temps comes strawberry season, with strawberry picking being one of the most popular outings for families. Strawberry Fields is just one of many local, commercial farms offering PYO (pick-your-own) strawberries, and is set on sprawling, green grounds. Visitors can enjoy homemade strawberry ice-cream, or sit back and have a picnic while the kids explore the charming old tractor playground.

2. Mount Coolum National Park, Mount Coolum
The adventurous family will love climbing one of the Coast’s most ancient volcanic mountains, which is around 26 million years old. Expect spectacular coastal views, rare and threatened plants, wildflowers and birdlife. This climb is one for the older kids, but if you have a strong parent and a sturdy baby carrier, it’s possible to take younger ones up with you. Just remember, it can be quite steep and rocky coming down, so take your time.

3. Maleny Dairies, Maleny
This family-owned and operated dairy farm is a hit with children and animal lovers, and a great excuse to see some of the Coast’s beautiful, green hinterland. Be sure to book a tour of the farm and its facilities as this is a great way to get up close and personal with all the farm animals and see the process of the produce, from paddock to plate! You will even get to taste test all of the yummy products, including the chocolate milk and strawberry yoghurt – both favourites with little tummies.

4. Currimundi Lake, Caloundra
If you’re after a relaxing day out at the beach, this beautiful, calm, sandy lake – which connects to Currimundi Beach – is perfect for families, particularly those with toddlers. The vast, shallow water means you can sit and watch the kids splash around and make sandcastles. Be sure to take your boogie boards, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards as there’s plenty of space to get out on the water. Fishing families might want to bring their rods and nets or get the kids to help pump for yabbies. There’s a hire shop over the road if you didn’t bring your gear, and there’s also coffee and ice-cream shops to refuel.

5. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Maleny
If you come to the Sunny Coast, you must take a moment to witness the breathtaking and iconic Glass House Mountains. The short rainforest walk is great for little legs and finishes at a fantastic cafe with a view, featuring log fires for chilly days. There’s also a lovely wooden playground so the kids can wear themselves out before heading home.
