2015 is officially underway, but before we get too settled into the routine of a new year, Australia Day approaches with the reprieve of a long weekend. It's time to start thinking about how to make the most of these three glorious days.
Communities across the country are sure to come alive with abounding patriotism, and a picnic provides the perfect opportunity to get in on the fun no matter where you are. With a full slate of events scheduled for all the major cities, you can spread out your blanket close to the action at one of these prime picnic spots.

Classic Picnic Picks In Canberra
If you're hoping to celebrate in the capital, pack your basket and head for Lennox Gardens. The lush lawns along Lake Burley Griffin are peppered with trees and feature views to Black Mountain. Alternatively, on the opposite side of the lake, Regatta Point provides expansive grounds and views of the National Library of Australia. Both also happen to be perfect viewing spots for the Australia Day Fireworks Spectacular.
Sydney's Family Extravaganza
Sydney will host events and activities right throughout the city, but, for family-style picnics with plenty to keep the kiddies entertained, set your sights on Hyde Park. This grassy public space will be taken over by Nickelodeon with kid-friendly activities galore. After a fun-filled day of picnicking, head to Darling Harbour for the evening fireworks extravaganza.

Australia Day On The Beach In Melbourne
Melbournites may want to consider a trip to Eastern Beach in Geelong for the Festival of Sails this Australia Day. Not only can you spread out your blanket in the soft white sand, but you'll also be treated to sailing competitions, art and craft stalls, live entertainment and family-friendly activities on and off the water. In the city, the Docklands will be brimming with Australia Day frivolity, culminating in fireworks over the NewQuay Piazza.

Beautiful Views Over Brisbane
To celebrate Australia Day with a picnic in Brisbane, you could head to one of the many inner city parks. Or, escape to the city fringes. Mount Coot-tha offers up no less than nine different picnic areas to choose from as well as gardens, hiking tracks and outdoor fun. The Mount Coot-tha Lookout is also a great way to experience the fireworks over the city come nightfall.
King's Park In Perth
Kings Park is the place to go for a picnic in Perth. Not only is it one of the world's largest inner city parks, but it offers expansive gardens, trees and views of the Perth city skyline. There are multiple locations with tables and BBQ facilities available, or seek out a more private space to shake out your blanket. Pick the right position and you might also glimpse the popular SkyWorks firework show at nearby Langley Park.
A Quiet Spot In Adelaide
The Australia Day celebrations will focus on Elder Park in Adelaide, but if you want to escape the crowds on a picnic for two, head to Botanic Park. Encompassing 34 hectares, it's dotted with multiple exotic flora species. This includes Moreton Bay Figs imported from Queensland. It also offers easy access to Adelaide Zoo and Elder Park should you wish to take part in the long weekend's festivities.

Hobart's Royal Beauty
If you're looking for a green space to lay out an Australia Day picnic in Hobart, the scenic Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens fits the bill. Beautifully maintained gardens with individual themes provide ample space to run and play. You can also feed the ducks! The park is only eight minutes from the Bellerive Boardwalk, which hosts Australia Day events throughout the morning.
Along The Waterfront In Darwin
If you're going to be in or around Darwin for Australia Day, plan on spending the day at the Waterfront. With plenty of green grass, patrolled swimming areas and a wave pool, it is the perfect spot to beat the heat while you celebrate. It will also host the annual Australia Day Fun Run as well as live entertainment through the morning.
