Consultant Debbie Wilson Shares Her APT River Cruise Experience

I was so excited to experience a river cruise for the first time. I flew Singapore Airlines from Australia into Amsterdam, where we spent one day exploring the city and its canals. The next morning, we boarded MS AmaDante, our APT cruise. I was on the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise over 14 nights.

There is something magical about drifting down the great waterways of Europe – the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. The slower pace of a river cruise really allows you to experience the sights and enjoy the scenery.

It was amazing to travel through Europe on a fully inclusive, 5-star APT river cruise. Picture: APT

Sitting back with a glass of wine, chatting to fellow travellers and watching castles drift by was very surreal. We drifted into the ports of Cologne, Rudesheim, Miltenberg, Wurzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau in Germany; Melk and Vienna in Austria; and Budapest in Hungary.

The best part of an APT cruise is it's fully inclusive, with no need to dip my hand in my pocket. All meals, all beverages – including local wines, cocktails and basic spirits – plus all tours the days we were in port are included in the one price.

The food was exceptional and the tours well thought out, with local guides. I loved that I didn't have to think of anything, just show up and it was all taken care of for us.

Who should do this trip?

Generally it was over-50s onboard. But it is suitable for singles, couples and families wanting quality time together.

What would you do again?

Amsterdam. It is such an amazing and lively city with many things to do and experience, from shopping, museums and visiting the beautiful flower markets to Anne Frank's house. There is something everyone would enjoy!

Where do you recommend staying?

I stayed in a panoramic balcony cabin, which was great, as you could relax and unwind and still see the scenery without leaving your cabin.
