Virgin Australia classes and baggage allowance
Understanding the different baggage rules for different airlines can be a minefield so we’ve pulled out the most important things to know for Virgin Australia’s different baggage allowances.
The first thing to know is that different fare classes and Velocity Reward Tiers have different baggage allowances when flying on a Virgin Australia operated aircraft.
The second is that baggage allowances may differ when travelling on a ‘code-share’ flight operated by one of Virgin Australia's partner airlines.
Carry-on Baggage Limits - Domestic & International
The same carry-on baggage limits apply to both domestic and international fares. Also note, no additional carry-on baggage allowance is granted to Red or Silver Velocity Members.
Economy, Economy X and Premium Economy Class Fare
One standard piece
7kgs total with maximum dimensions: 56cm long, 36cm wide, 23cm deep
OR
Two small pieces
7kgs total with maximum dimensions: 48cm long, 34cm wide, 23cm deep
OR
One standard piece and one suit pack
7kgs total with maximum dimensions (standard piece): 56cm long, 36cm wide, 23cm deep and (suit pack): 114cm tall, 60cm wide, 11cm deep
PLUS
One personal item like a laptop computer, handbag, pocketbook or purse
Business Class Fare, Velocity Gold and Platinum Members
Similar to the above economy rules except these customers are allowed 14kgs total, distributed between two pieces of carry-on.
Checked-In Baggage Limits - Domestic & International
Getaway, Elevate, Freedom and Economy Reward Class Fare
For Red or non Velocity members - 1 x 23kg
For Silver Velocity members - 2 x 23kg
For Gold Velocity members - 2 x 23kg
For Platinum Velocity members - 3 x 23kg
Business, Business Saver and Business Reward Class Fare
For Red or non Velocity members - 2 x 32kg
For Silver Velocity members - 2 x 32kg
For Gold Velocity members - 2 x 32kg
For Platinum Velocity members - 3 x 32kg
Overweight & Excess Baggage Guidelines
Checked baggage that exceeds the weight limit will attract overweight baggage fees. Excess baggage is accepted on a space available basis by the airline depending on available cargo space.
Each piece of baggage must not weigh more than 32kg or exceed the total linear dimensions of 140cm (length + width + height).
Sporting equipment and other bulky items represent one piece of checked baggage. Excess charges will apply for oversized or overweight items.

Pre-Purchased baggage
Excess baggage is charged per piece and can be pre-purchased as additional pieces to the included allowances or purchased by pieces at the airport at a higher rate.

Baggage charges will incur higher fees at the airport. The below table reflects the current applicable charges.
