The lure of trekking has brought millions since Nepal's borders opened to outsiders in the 1950s. Going to Everest Base Camp and beyond? Seeking a leisurely walk from one mountain lodge to another? Want an adrenalin rush from bungee jumping, canyoning, kayaking or mountain biking? You won't find a better backdrop.

Of course, a holiday in Nepal can be sedate too. Exploring the cultural remnants and monuments in the preserved sections of Kathmandu, is fascinating. Wandering the cobblestone streets of traffic-free Bhaktapur is tranquil too. The lost-in-time village of Bandipur on a high ridge above the Dumre, has bewitchingly preserved Newari houses. It's only recently opened to tourism, so there are few places to stay but you'll hope it remains so. A holiday in Nepal is a treasure itself.
