Relaxation and friendly Thai hospitality
Throughout the past century, and continuing today, Hua Hin is popular with the Thai royal family. Scores of well-to-do Bangkok-dwellers (locals and expats) have since adopted Hua Hin as their beachside weekend getaway. At just a 2.5-hour drive from the capital, it attracts tourists too. There are a string of luxury hotels and flavours of the world dished up at the local restaurants, reflective of their clientele.
This isn't the party-hard spot luring backpackers seeking a waterfront good time – a holiday in Hua Hin is a little more sedate (and not as developed as the other Bangkok beach escape, Pattaya). It's more approapriate to ride horses along the beach (assuming you've not only come to lie on the sand) or try a round of golf at the Royal Hua Hin. For a fine view of the resort and a chance to explore Buddhist temples, head to the top of Khao Takiab, 14 kilometres from Hua Hin. Walking, cycling, trekking, kite boarding, martial arts and eco-cruises are also popular in and near the town.
