Uruaguay is bordered by Brazil and Argentina, with a south Atlantic coastline and a subtropical climate. Your introduction to the country is likely to be via Montevideo – the hub of commerce and higher education here, with architecture reflective of its Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and British immigrants. The nightlife is big, the steaks are bigger and the welcome you're likely to receive, even larger.

Uruguay: MontevideoMontevideo - the Largest City, the Capital, and the Chief Port of Uruguay

This is a place with a rich agricultural history and fertile plains – Cerro Catedral, the country's highest point, is 514 metres, so if you hear the phrase likening Uruguay to 'the Switzerland of South America', it's not referencing an alpine geography, rather, stability.

Uruguay: Punta del EstePunta del Este

Uruguay's most glitzy resort town – with flash restaurants, upmarket hotels and moored yatchs clanking in the harbour – is Punta del Este. Popular with celebs, Argentines and Brazilians, bring your beach-ready body if you're coming to this part of the world. Where you won't find any beach bronzing going on is in Uruguay's heartland, at Tacuarembó, deep in gaucho country.
