Chile is a long snippet (4,300 kilometres) of South America wedged between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Before the Spanish landed in the 16th century, the Incas (whose archaeological relics can be found today) ruled the north and the indigenous Araucanians made their home in Chile's central and southern regions.

Given Chile's ribbon-like shape, you'll find deserts, forests and fjords all in the one country. The Atacama, touted as the world's driest dessert, is tucked in the north, along with archealogical ruins and Andean highlands. Central Chile enjoys a Mediterranean climate; here you'll find Santiago, top ski resorts and vineyards. The far south has Western Patagonian lakes, forests and ice caps. Also in Chilean territory is the far-flung, mysterious Easter Island.
