Staying in Sacramento's wine country

Although California is prominently known for its beaches, if you visit Sacramento you replace the surf and sand with hundreds of hectares of vineyards alongside welcoming wineries. The city is surrounded by more than 200 wineries, which you can visit for tastings of meticulously created Californian wines and to admire the natural scenery.

There are plenty of tasting establishments within the city or you can head to the numerous wineries outside – only an hour drive. Alternatively, you may want to stay in wine country at one of the hotels or inns. The Armador Harvest Inn takes you into the country, surrounded by lush vineyards, and the Fitzpatrick Winery and Lodge features heavenly rooms and a log-cabin tasting area.

Going back to the old

Old Sacramento is a unique area of the city that takes you back in time to the beginning of California when the Gold Rush was well and truly underway. Positioned along the Sacramento River, Old Sacramento includes restored buildings, horse-drawn carriages and historical attractions such as the California State Railroad Museum.

Accommodation exists nearby Old Sacramento or as a part of the historic district – the Delta King Hotel houses you in an authentic paddle-wheeler with two theatres and restaurants. You can also stay at the Vagabond Inn Executive, which boasts a pool and spa area.

Downtown sights and attractions

Staying in Downtown Sacramento is an excellent way of immersing yourself in the city, whether you're visiting for a long or short time. With highly-rated restaurants, almost 30 museums including the California State Capitol Museum, shopping at Downtown Plaza, and Discovery Park slightly north, there's plenty to fill the hours of each day.

Downtown accommodation in Sacramento includes some of the best, such as the Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel housed in a restored brick building with a heated outdoor pool. You might also want to rest your head at the Residence Inn, which is positioned right near the State Capitol building and the Convention Center.
