Soak up the relaxed city vibe
Portland is a delightful combination of old and new, featuring a relaxed, small town vibe with beautiful parks and stunning views of Mount Hood. A smattering of acclaimed restaurants, food wagons and craft beers offer a vibrant culinary experience, while the downtown shopping and local markets provide ample opportunity to pick up a souvenir. Amongst it all, attractions such as Pittock Mansion tell the history of Portland.
A wonderful selection of hotels, boutiques, B&Bs, hostels and holiday rentals are abundantly represented in the city. This includes the RiverPlace Hotel – a 4-star luxury option with a central location close to the downtown area and International Rose Test Garden. Mid range options include multiple Marriott locations in the heart of the city, while the Hostelling International provides lower costs.
Get out of town
Enjoying Portland's scenic location couldn't be easier. Forest Park in the city boasts more than 2,000 hectares of forest within minutes of downtown Portland. Or, venture approximately one hour from the city and you'll hit Columbia River Gorge. This lush pine forest boasts more than 90 waterfalls, numerous hiking trails and spectacular mountain views.
As all of this is so close to the city, it's entirely possible to stay overnight in one of the many hotels in Portland and take day trips to the surrounds. Though, if you'd like to get back to nature, there are a handful of accommodation options in neighbouring Hood River. This includes the Hood River Hotel, which is a charming boutique with national Historic Landmark status.
Portland on the go
Busy travellers can rest assured that there is still plenty of hospitality available to those just passing through Portland. The city centre is less than 20 minutes from the international airport, meaning long layovers are easily spent checking out Portland's many attractions. In the immediate airport area, unique shopping and dining venues are also readily available.
There are plenty of hotels within minutes of the airport, providing visitors plenty of choice in terms of style and price. The Sheraton, Hampton Inn, Radisson and Holiday Inn all offer locations within five kilometres. The Ramada and Americas Best Value Inn & Suites are also close by for a more budget-friendly option.
