Local flavour in Male
Male is a great location for travellers that want to get an authentic look at life in the Maldives. It is the economic and political capital of the region, and offers a sweep of colourful buildings along its narrow streets. Because it is so small, the city invites exploration, with highlights including the Friday Mosque, produce markets and artificial beach.
Cheap rooms are readily available in Male, but it's worth spending a bit more on accommodation if you're planning on more than a night. You may want to consider a boutique hotel or B&B such as the Salsa Boutique or Somerset Hotel. Alternatively, the Traders Hotel is one of the few larger establishments, offering easy access to the ferry terminals.
Journey to Hulhumale
Hulhumale is an artificial island that was developed to expand Male. It isn't as developed as the capital city, so it does offer some respite from the bustle. There are a number of restaurants and cafes available, or spend the afternoon soaking up the sun along the beach.
If you're thinking of a stay on Hulhumale, there are a range of available hotels that generally provide cheaper prices than the capital. Smaller boutiques are the norm with quality rooms and friendly service. The Airport Beach Hotel provides easy access to the international airport with an on-site spa and restaurant, while the Le Vieux Nice Inn is a family-friendly option with European flair.
The Maldives beyond Male
Male is certainly the gateway to many of the Maldives' most famous island locations. From here, it's easy to jet off to the spectacular seclusion and scenery that these islands are famous for. From obscenely luxurious getaways to fantastic family-fun, you can easily find an island resort to cater to your needs.
If money is no object, you'll find such renowned brands as the Four Seasons offering up premium island resorts. The Baros Maldives is another opulent resort that provides guests with overwater accommodation, waterfall plunge pools and decadent spa treatments. Closer to Male, the Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa and Kurumba Maldives offer 4.5-star luxury and exceptional diving opportunities.
