At the heart of Hakata

Fukuoka is a modern metropolis that was once two separate cities. The merger took place many centuries ago, but the distinction between Hakata and Fukuoka can still be felt in certain areas. Hakata continues to act as one of two city centres, with such highlights as Canal City, Nakasu Kawabata and Hakata-za (shopping) and a great range of ultra-modern hotels.

Contemporary style and comfort abound throughout the Hakata area, with hotels to suit all styles and budgets. 4-star luxury at incredible rates is available at the Hakata Excel Hotel Tokyu, while the Hotel Hakata Place provides fantastic amenities with lower costs within 15 minutes of the Nakasu shopping area.

The bustling epicentre of Tenjin

Tenjin acts as the second city centre in Fukuoka, which is perhaps most known for its vibrant shopping scene. Chic venues line the streets above and below ground, offering everything from Barneys of New York to local boutiques. Though, it's not all shopping bags and credit cards as this side of the city also boasts Ohori Park, the Fukuoka Dome and a number of high quality, reasonably priced hotels.

Like its Hakata counterpart, the accommodation through Tenjin provides modern, comfortable lodging that presents excellent value for money. This includes such hotels as the Hotel Monterey Lasoeur Fukuoka a few minutes' drive from Ohori Park. The Nishitetsu Inn Fukuoka and Plaza Hotel Tenjin are also great mid-range options.

For a day trip

If you've had your fill of city life, escape on a day trip to the hot springs of Beppu, the matsuri of Kurume or the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine of Dazaifu. The former two locales are approximately an hour from the city centre, while the third is a mere 30 minutes. A day is easily spent exploring these surrounding areas, but if you'd like to extend your stay, nearby lodging is available.

Beppu provides coastal accommodation with Hotel Aile and Hotel Umine. Kurume offers a sweep of cheap hotels with comfortable rooms, but accommodation in Dazaifu is somewhat limited. The Route Inn Granita Dazaifu is one of two available options with 3-star service close to the train station.
