Find the old and new in Edmonton’s core

Edmonton’s oldest and most historical area also happens to be its bustling city centre. Boasting beautiful old homes, quaint streets lined with lush trees and high-rise office towers, downtown offers both old and new sides to this unique metropolitan area.

If you stay in the heart of the city, you have convenient access to most of Edmonton’s main attractions, festivals and venues, as well as some great shopping and eating areas. Downtown Edmonton has all the big name hotels including The Fairmont, Days Inn, Holiday Inn, Delta, Nova Suites and Comfort Inn, which all provide sumptuous facilities and rooms.

South Central’s youthful exuberance

Just south of the North Saskatchewan River is a thriving area home to the University of Alberta. This is a great spot for young travellers who wish to enjoy the company of local and international college students. Take a stroll down Whyte Avenue, Edmonton’s unrivalled social area, for access to restaurants, bars and clubs, live music and theatre, and shops.

Both the Metterra Hotel and the Varscona Hotel are located on Whyte Avenue; they deliver stunning interiors and those little touches of luxury that make any stay memorable. If you want to get right amongst the action, the Commercial Hotel’s on-site bar often hosts musicians and large crowds who keep the nights rocking.

History in the park

When visiting Edmonton, you may want to experience the city’s rich history up close. This can be done at Fort Edmonton Park, Canada’s largest historic park. Broken up into three distinct areas representing different time periods, the Park houses more than 75 structures, most of which can be entered. Also nearby is a great slope for beginner skiers and snowboarders that can be used during the winter months.

Located right in Fort Edmonton Park is the Hotel Selkirk, a reconstructed 1920s hotel that completely immerses you in another era. Unfortunately, its rooms are only available during summer and spring. There are other high-quality hotels nearby including the Delta South, Travelodge South and Holiday Inn South.
