Compact and charming Downtown

Beautiful and awe-inspiring, Anchorage is framed by the snow-capped peaks of the rugged Chugach Mountains. The municipality covers a whopping 4920 square kilometres but the city’s downtown pocket is compact, pedestrian-friendly and full of history, hotels and activities.

For the budget-conscious, there are a great range of mid-range stays that offer comfort and convenience right in the heart of town. Select your base from the likes of the Quality Suites, Homeward Suites and Best Western. For those willing to splash out a bit more, choose a room with a view of Cook Inlet at the Hilton Anchorage, or a suite overlooking the mountains at the historic and luxurious Hotel Captain Cook.

Ahh, the serenity

If you’re after a quaint, romantic getaway, or just want to enjoy a slower pace while in town, there are a handful of bed and breakfasts scattered in and around Anchorage. In town, 11th Avenue Bed and Breakfast is a lovely escape with views of the city and mountain ranges, and Walkabout Town Bed and Breakfast enjoys a tranquil neighbourhood and park setting.

Travel outside of the city to Big Bear Bed and Breakfast to experience a typical Alaskan log home. Offering a little more peace and quiet, Goose Lake Lodge B&B is one of only two houses on the lake and a place where you can simply relax and enjoy the serenity of the wilderness.

Bohemian Spenard

Those that need to be within easy reach of the runway, or the Lake Hood Floatplane base, can make their base in Spenard. Not only ideal for your first or last night in town, there are an abundance of alternative stores, boutiques and things to see and do. Spenard is home to a high concentration of bohemian ‘lifestylers’ and fantastic community events including the famous ‘Spenardi Gras’ celebration.

From the Super 8 to the Courtyard by Marriot, airport hotels cater for all budgets and offer top-notch facilities for a pleasant and comfortable stay. If you’re after something a little bit more special or unique, spend a night at the deluxe Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage and enjoy the views of the floatplanes taking off over Lake Spenard.
