The mad and messy La Tomantina festival is held on the last Wednesday in August each year in the town of Buñol, near the city of Valencia in Spain. For this world famous event, approximately 30,000 people from all around the world converge on Buñol to throw more than 100 metric tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes at each other.
The week-long festival leading up to the monster tomato fight features live music, parades, dancing and fireworks. On the evening before the tomato fight, a paella cooking contest is held, celebrating the region's famed seafood dish.
