Bastille Day marks the storming of the Bastille in Paris on the 14th of July, 1789. Disaffected with the reign of King Louis XVI, hundreds of Parisians marched to the Bastille Prison and killed the governor, triggering the French Revolution and the famous declaration of freedom, equality and brotherhood.
There are Bastille Day celebrations throughout France but the biggest take place in Paris along the famous Champs-Elysees. At night, a spectacular fireworks display ignites in the sky and parties continue in the city's bars, cafes and restaurants. A dinner cruise on the River Seine is a great way to spend the evening of Bastille Day and watch the fireworks.
