Rich Nile River floods provided for the development of one of the greatest civilizations the planet has known. Ancient sites with architectural jewels – of which the pyramids (at Giza) are only a handful, albeit a significant one – are dotted along Egypt's timeless waterway. Giza is also home to the Sphinx; tombs in the Valley of the Queens and the Valley of the Kings are just outside Luxor; and the temples at Aswan in the south are worth a felucca ride down the Nile.
