Avios is the rebranded 'Air Miles' program for both British Airways and the Spain's flagship carrier, Iberia. According to Avios, the main Avios scheme is better for irregular or casual travellers while the British Airways Executive Club is best for frequent business flyers, offering benefits such as free airport lounge access for members in certain tiers.

Frequent flyer status for Silver, Gold and Platinum members is recognised at an equivalent oneworld membership level. Your oneworld membership status is confirmed by a Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald gemstone on your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership card.

Points – Earning & Expiry

Avios is the currency of the British Airways Executive Club, with a 36-month shelf life. Below are a number of ways you can collect Avios points:

  • Fly with British Airways or one of the partner airlines
  • Stay in a partner hotel
  • Rent an Avis car
  • Use a British Airways credit card or shop with one of their many partners
  • Book a British Airways holiday package
  • Park and transfer at any major UK airport or book a Heathrow Express rail transfer

Redeeming Points

Points can be redeemed for flights with British Airways or its oneworld partners, flight upgrades, hotels, car rental and even alcoholic beverages from British Airways. 

Avios Partners

If you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer, you can also benefit from British Airways as it is part of the oneworld alliance. You can earn and redeem Qantas Points when you fly on eligible oneworld flights and fare types, and you also earn Status credits towards advancing your Qantas Frequent Flyer and oneworld tier status.

Similarly to Qantas, British Airways has established a co-branded American Express credit card where you can accumulate Avios points, even when you are not flying, on almost every purchase you make.
