Getting to Rarotonga

Cheap direct Rarotonga flights from Sydney take about 6 hours however this service may only operate once or twice a week. Most flights to Rarotonga require a stop in Auckland where travel time is usually 8 or 9 hours.

Airlines from Australia

Flights to Rarotonga include one weekly Air New Zealand direct service from Sydney. Both Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia provide Rarotonga flights from many Australian cities to Auckland where convenient connections are available to Rarotonga.

Rarotonga International Airport (RAR)

Rarotonga’s airport lies directly along the northern coast of the island just a few kilometres outside of Avarua, the capital and largest city of the Cook Islands. In 2010 the terminal underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to bring the facilities up to modern standards. Rental cars and mopeds may be booked at the airport as well as island tours.

The largest of the Cook Islands, Rarotonga is a popular holiday and resort destination with some of the most beautiful beaches and coral reef areas in the South Pacific. Over 30 kilometres in circumferance, Rarotonga is surrounded by incredibly clear and shallow water and vast stretches of reef making this a haven for snorkelling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

Walking trails from one side of the island to the other offer a rare chance to visit the atols dense rainforest areas where mountain lookouts afford stunning views across the lush green landscape.
