Rangoon International Airport (RGN)

The international airport is located approximately 15 kilometres from the city centre. There is limited public transport from the airport and taxi is the quickest, most convenient method of travel. Money exchange and a tourist information desk are located in the arrivals area and several restaurants and shops are located in the main terminal. There are few hotels near the airport however there is a hotel and business centre located about 5 minutes away.

Rangoon is a city of contradictions, one of attractive European colonial buildings and large magnificent Asian pagodas, modern high rise buildings with neglected streets and shop fronts and a centre of commerce and culture but one stripped of its capital status. Indeed the identity crisis might come from the fact that several cultures at one time or another controlled the city, including the British and Chinese. Once the capital of Burma, the city was replaced as the centre of government by a remote town purpose built for the role.

Rangoon

As Burma continues to open its doors to the outside world, Rangoon, as its largest city has become an increasingly popular destination. A number of airlines are inaugurating service to Rangoon and modern hotels are beginning to spring up. Points of interest for visitors include many beautiful religious sites, urban parks and gardens as well as food markets and local restaurants. Museums are rather uninspiring and there’s not a great deal in the way of cultural activities, but Rangoon is a city slowly on the mend. The city can feel as though it was forgotten in time but the people are warm and inviting and the low key tourist atmosphere can be refreshing.
