Phnom Penh is a city slowly reclaiming its urban beauty and charm. As Cambodia liberalized relations with the west and overcame past political strife, the nation’s capital city is beginning to transform itself into a modern civic and cultural centre. While Phnom Penh might still be a work in progress, the city is one that offers a uniquely Cambodian experience compared with more typical Asian excursions.
A former French colonial city, the once great European style found around the city has mostly disappeared however there are still lovely examples to be found of its French architectural past. Today, the hot and steamy city features river side parks where intricate Buddhist Temples and pagoda’s decorate the landscape. It is the busy streets lined with markets and small eateries however that form the true backdrop to the city and if you can get past the urban chaos of crowds and traffic and unpaved roads then this nitty-gritty capital is sure to offer a memorable cultural experience.
