If you take a flight to Mount Gambier in summer, you'll see Blue Lake – the Artesian-filled crater used for the city's drinking water – at its cobalt blue best. (It changes to grey in winter.) Its sister craters include Valley Lake and Leg of Mutton Lake, which offer picnic grounds, walking trails and water sports. Grab a guide if you want to dive the area's water-filled caves.
Red wine connoisseurs will enjoy sampling at cellar doors in the Penola and Coonawarra wine regions, a pleasant 50-kilometre drive from town.
