Male International Airport (MLE)

Male’s airport is located on a neighbouring island just a five minute ferry ride away. Both water and air taxis are available at time of arrival. Many resorts offer free ferry service for booked guests if pre-arranged before arrival.

Male is the capital and largest city of the island nation of Maldives, located in the beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean. Just several hundred kilometres from India and just a short flight west, Male is the gateway to a stunning stretch of islands that have become known for their remote beauty, gorgeous beaches and clear, shallow waters. The city of Male encompasses an entire island, one which sits at the northern end of a long chain of small, inviting atolls. The entire island is less than 2 kilometres long and only 1 kilometre wide and can be easily navigated on foot however many of the main sites of interest are located in one small area on the northern shore.

Male

Many tourists continue on to the other islands where private resorts inhabit secluded areas of the country, but if you’re looking for a bit of cultural flavour then a stop in Male should be on your itinerary. Markets line the busy streets while locals can be found enjoying an afternoon at South West Harbour where many of the city’s cafes and restaurants are located. From here there are ferries to nearby islands to excellent snorkelling and swimming areas. While there is little in the way of museums or other cultural outlets, Male is a unique city with its own distinct flavour.
