More than 1 million visitors have come to this central Queensland site since it was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988 and many say that alone is worth the flight to Longreach. You can get up close to aviation history in town too, at the QANTAS Founders Museum, and tour Australia's first passenger jet.
The locals here are familiar with drought and flood and when the river's 'right' you'll enjoy a cruise on the Coolibah-lined Thomson River. After flooding the town's Lily Lagoon makes a great photo opportunity.
