Getting to Lisbon
Because of its great distance from Australia, flights to Lisbon require one or two stops along the way depending on the airline and routing. Many Asian and Middle Eastern airlines operate cheap flights into Lisbon and these are places where most connections occur. Travel time can be as long as 24 hours due to the city’s location in south-western Europe.
Airlines from Australia
Lisbon flights from Australia are operated by two airlines. British Airways offers service from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth with stopovers in Asia and London. Emirates also provides one stop service through its hub in Dubai.
Lisbon Portela International Airport (LIS)
Lisbon’s international airport consistently ranks as one of Europe’s best. Public transport between the airport and city include frequent underground train service with departures continuing until 1am. Bus service is also frequent and can be accessed just outside the arrivals level of Terminal 1. While not usually an option for international passengers with luggage, the airport does offer bicycle rental for use on its lengthy bicycle paths that lead to many areas of the city. Bicycles may be rented at Terminal 1 arrivals near the information desk.
