Aquatic sports are popular here and the 122 coral islands comprising the Abrolhos Islands, about 70 kilometres offshore, provide excellent dive and fishing spots. These islands are also part of local history – the "Batavia" shipwrecked here in 1629 and there was a subsequent mutiny.
Shoreside there are regular farmers' and craft markets, well-preserved historic buildings, the HMAS Sydney II Memorial and the Western Australian Museum Geraldton celebrates the area's rich past and present. Wildflowers also carpet the region from July to October and it's worth seeing.
