Getting to Geneva

Cheap flights to Geneva from Australia require a stop over in Asia or the Middle East. Both Virgin Australia and Qantas offer flights to Geneva through their respective code share partners Etihad Airways and Emirates. Flying time is approximately 15 hours to Middle East hub cities with Geneva another 6 hours flying time away.

Swiss International Airlines is a Star Alliance member and has an extensive international network. While it does not fly to Australia it does operate to Asian hub cities such as Beijing, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo with onward connections to Australia with partner airlines.

Airlines from Australia

There are four airlines that serve both Australia and Geneva. The quickest and most direct flights to Geneva are with Virgin Australia’s codeshare partner Etihad Airways through Abu Dhabi and with Qantas codeshare partner Emirates through Dubai. Both Etihad and Emirates serve Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth (Etihad flights to Perth begin 15 July 2014). British Airways also offers convenient connections via London while Air China provides Geneva flights through its Beijing hub.

Geneva International Airport (GVA)

Geneva International Airport is located approximately 4 kilometres from the city centre. Public transport is plentiful and includes taxi as well as frequent bus and train service. Geneva airport offers free tickets for bus and train service within the Geneva region that are good for travel for up to 80 minutes. Tickets are dispensed from a machine at the baggage claim area. The airport also features many car rental companies on the arrivals level.

Geneva may be a relatively small city with a metropolitan population of only about 1 million people, but its importance on the world stage is unquestionable.
