About Bangkok

Arguably the premiere attraction in the Thai capital is the Grand Palace, the official residence for Thailand's royalty since its completion in 1785. The gold tipped structure sits majestically on the Chao Phraya River and contains the Wat Phra Kaew, the most sacred Buddhist temple in the country and the revered Emerald Buddha.

The world's largest reclining Buddha is found near the Palace at Wat Pho. Other notable temples include Wat Arun, Golden Mount, Wat Suthat and Wat Ratchanaddaram.

Lumphini Park offers a great escape from the city's frenetic pace and a boat trip on the canals provides a fun yet convenient way to move around the city. Shoppers will love the department store MBK and the Bobae Market, an extensive clothing market. Khao San Road is the city's dedicated tourist strip featuring the associated traveller infrastructure and an extensive range of Bangkok accommodation.

Bangkok's colourful nightlife is legendary with everything from traditional cultural performances to risqué Go Go dances and mesmerising drag shows. And it would be criminal not to experience a Thai massage in the country that developed the relaxing art form.

There are several fascinating Bangkok tours available including day trips north to explore the remnants of ancient Ayutthaya, paying your respects at the Bridge on the River Quai or patting a placid tiger at the Tiger Temple.

Best time to fly – Bangkok weather

Bangkok is pretty much a year-round destination, although the weather is influenced by the tropical monsoon climate. Late December and early January is the coolest time to visit Bangkok, but as one of the hottest cities in the world, you can still expect temperatures to be higher than 30 degrees Celsius. March to June is particularly hot, and the rainy season falls between July and October.
