From 3 April 2019 the full sharia penal code (law) takes effect in Brunei. It applies to Muslims, non-Muslims and foreigners even when on Brunei registered aircraft and vessels. Passengers must adhere to the following carry-on baggage limits imposed by Royal Brunei. Bags in excess of the below amounts will be required to travel as checked luggage.
Checked Baggage
The amount of the free checked baggage allowance depends on the passenger’s fare class and class of travel. This amount will be printed on the passenger’s electronic ticket. Business Class guests are permitted multiple bags up to 30 or 40 kilograms (depending on fare class). Economy Class guests are allowed to check up to 20 or 25 kilograms of luggage.
While multiple bags are allowed, no single piece may weigh more than 32kg. Bags must also fit within size guidelines. The maximum linear dimensions when adding the depth + width + height, must not exceed 157cm (62 inches). Bags exceeding the size or weight limits will be charged overweight or excess baggage fees.
Sporting Equipment
Sporting equipment may be included as part of a passenger’s checked baggage allowance provided the item fits within the size and weight limitations. Certain types of sporting equipment are eligible for a 5kg or 12kg excess baggage waiver.
Snow and water ski equipment, surf boards and bowling balls are eligible for the 5kg waiver, while golf equipment, diving equipment and bicycles receive the 12kg waiver when going towards the checked baggage allowance.
Passengers must ensure that proper packaging guidelines are followed for each type of equipment. The guidelines may vary depending on the type of equipment and the passenger or travel agent should inquire with Royal Brunei at least 24 hours before departure time for specific details.
